A Story from an NSTEP Certificate Program Alumni

Charlotte came to NSTEP in 2020 as a Bachelor in Kinesiology student seeking a practicum placement. At this time, Charlotte was unsure of what she wanted to do after graduation. There were many options available – continue her education, work in a clinical setting, or coach!

Charlotte worked with the NSTEP YEG team at Richard Secord Elementary School and gained experience in designing a new physical education and lunch program. She started speaking to students about physical education and nutrition while collaborating with other educational professionals. Charlotte felt right at home at Richard Secord! She enjoyed being in a school environment and concluded that her future career needed to involve children. The practicum placement gave Charlotte a new experience that she didn’t have access to previously and helped her make a decision about her future!

Charlotte now works as an Educational Assistant in a school with two young boys with autism and specializes in inclusive education. Her NSTEP certificate program education supports her in designing and executing physical education lessons. She also has the background to answer her curious students’ nutrition questions! The certificate program has given her the confidence to solve problems and create a safe space for her students daily.

About the NSTEP Certificate Program

The NSTEP certificate program covers nutrition, physical activity, fundamental movement, how the brain learns, and the growth mindset. NSTEP facilitators engage students by using storytelling and real-life applications. Participants learn, practice, and can apply this knowledge to their professional careers to become nutrition and active living advocates for the people they serve.

We welcome students in any post-secondary specialization. The certificate program can also be offered as extra training for various community groups and organizations that work with children and youth.
