ReBrand Employment Initiative for Youth in Alberta

A Story from a Past Participant

A participant at the ReBrand Employment Initiative for Youth in Alberta was shocked to learn that his daily energy drinks have 56 grams (or 11.2 teaspoons) of sugar per 473 mL can. During the session, he discovered that sugar contributes to mood fluctuations, making someone feel erratic, increased weight gain, and insomnia. People are getting addicted to sugar at younger ages because of processed foods which can lead to chronic diseases and illnesses. He participated in the sugar shocker experiment, an interactive activity where he guessed how much sugar is in frequently used food and beverages. The NSTEP team taught him about nutrition, the three food groups and how to read ingredient labels to ensure he wasn’t unintentionally harming his health.

You will be happy to hear that by the program’s end, the participant quit energy drinks, and increased his water intake. He began to feel better, started walking more, was more active, and saved money as well. Soon after, he was happier, had more confidence, and got an apprenticeship position he desired! Starting one healthy habit changed his life.

MCG Career’s ReBrand Employment Initiative for Youth in Alberta teaches participants career and life skills to prepare them for future employment. For participants to be successful in their job searches and future careers, they must understand how healthy eating, proper exercise and mental health relate to stress management and overall success. NSTEP facilitates sessions for participants to learn health and active living content so they are better positioned to reach their future goals.
